Brad Guzan, in for Shay Given, performed heroics, making two "world-class" saves - as Lambert referred to them - to deny the home side any more than a point.

Karim El Ahmadi shone in the central ground while Andreas Weimann did his usual shift up top alongside the predatory Darren Bent.

Ciaran Clark defended well and scored the goal for Villa while his backline partner Ron Vlaar was a rock.

Matt Lowton marauded down the right and defended well while Eric Lichaj excelled in an unusual left-back berth.

Brett Holman, much like Ireland, attacked with venom and defended well too.
