NextGen Series report: PSV Eindhoven U19 1-0 Villa U19
The boys in claret and blue went into the Group 4 clash at Der Herdgang determined to get their first points on the board following the 3-1 defeat to Sporting CP of Portugal a fortnight ago.
There were three changes from the Sporting game with goalkeeper Brad Watkins making his NextGen bow, while two of last year's stars Courtney Cameron and Samir Carruthers came in for Ricardo Calder and Derrick Williams.
The two sides were evenly matched throughout the contest, although PSV created the better opportunities in the first period.
Villa were edged out by a single goal, with Geraldo Alberto Antonio's strike on 34 minutes enough to give the Dutch side the victory.
But the Young Lions came on strong after the break with Jack Grealish creating two opportunities from free-kicks.
Irish striker Michael Drennan couldn't quite make contact with a well-delivered cross into the box, while midfielder Malcolm Melvin also had a penalty appeal turned down.
Assistant academy manager Steve Burns felt Villa acquitted themselves well against their Dutch opponents.
He said: "It was a very even game. There was nothing between the two teams but they probably had the better chances overall.
"We had a couple of good opportunities as well as a penalty shout which could have gone either way.
"But the team gave a good account of themselves and it was also a fillip for the academy that Derrick Williams and Graham Burke were in the first team squad [against Tranmere] last night."
Villa's next game in the European U19 competition is against Celtic at Villa Park on Wednesday September 19.
