Villa kicked off the Paul Lambert era with a 1-0 defeat against West Ham United at Upton Park.

But the claret and blues can deem themselves unlucky after being edged out in a tight opening Barclays Premier League encounter.

Kevin Nolan scrambled home the only goal of the game just before half-time to give the Hammers three points.

Boss Lambert and midfielder Fabian Delph were on hand to give their verdicts after the final whistle.

Lambert admitted there was a sense of disappointment after losing his first top-flight match in charge of Villa.

But he stressed there were plenty of positives to take from his team's display against the newly-promoted east London outfit.

The manager added there is a long way to go in this top-flight campaign and he is remaining upbeat about his side's prospects.

Delph said Villa will regroup next week and seek to put right the mistakes they made at West Ham.

He discussed his feelings at being handed a start for the opening game of the season.

The former Leeds United midfielder also hailed the impact of Karim El Ahmadi after lining up alongside the debutant.
