The boys in claret and blue have faced some intriguing pre-season tests against top European opposition in the past. As we build up to this weekend's game at the Werderstadion, check out these images of some of Villa's past pre-season encounters. Click here for the Views of Villa image gallery. The 3-0 victory over Inter Milan in 2007 was Villa's first prestige friendly at Villa Park for over a decade. And it was an afternoon to remember as two goals from Gareth Barry and another from Martin Laursen sunk the Italian giants, who had the likes of Luis Figo and Zlatan Ibrahimovic in their ranks. The Italian theme continued a couple of years later when Fiorentina were the visitors to Villa Park. Villa - who had toppled another Serie A side Juventus a week earlier to win the Peace Cup - edged out La Viola with Emile Heskey earning them a 1-0 success. Fabian Delph made an impressive debut in midfield following his switch from Leeds United. It was a much different story, though, when Villa met Fiorentina at the Gotham Cup in New York in 1999. John Gregory's team - which included the likes of Ian Taylor, Dion Dublin, David James and skipper Gareth Southgate - were crushed 4-0 by the star-studded Florence outfit. A show-stopping performance from Gabriel Batistuta in Gotham City prompted the Birmingham Mail's headline 'Bat-man sinks Villa's hopes'. In August 2010, Villa were held to a goalless draw against Valencia in a match that turned out to be Martin O'Neill's last as manager. The Valencia squad that evening included current Chelsea star Juan Mata, who had featured in Spain's World Cup triumph a month earlier. Click here to check out the pre-season picture gallery.
