Memoravilla: Focus on Villa Monopoly, Top Trumps and Subbuteo

Throughout the summer, Dave Bridgewater will be looking at various aspects of Villa memorabilia.

From books to board games, magazines to newspapers, CDs to top trump cards, he'll be looking at a host of claret and blue collectibles.

This week, he looks back at games with a Villa theme.

Memoravilla

1] Monopoly

The world's most famous board game has been adapted to various locations down the years and a couple of years ago the Aston Villa edition was launched. All those London streets from the original 1930s version were replaced by famous players and managers who have made a big impact at Villa Park down the years.

Instead of purchasing property, you buy star Villa names; instead of purchasing railways stations, you can snap up the Trinity Road stand, the Doug Ellis stand, the North Stand and the Holte End.

It all adds up to a Villa board game fest. But you still have to pass Go!

2] Subbuteo

This wasn't, strictly speaking, a Villa game - but you would have been forgiven for thinking so when Subbuteo released their Club Edition in 1984.

Although the flick-to-kick figures inside the box wore traditional red and blue kits, the cover image was taken from Villa's fifth round FA Cup-tie against Watford in February 1983, with Nigel Spink trying to prevent the ball from going for a corner.

Dennis Mortimer, Gary Williams were also in the picture, against a backdrop of the old Trinity Road. Villa won 4-1, by the way.

You could also buy a Subbuteo team in Villa kit - and one of our plastic "players" also featured in a promotional Subbuteo team which was commissioned to mark the launch of the Premier League in 1992.

3] Villa Park Jigsaw Puzzle

The new Trinity Road stand is the prominent feature of this massive jigsaw puzzle, which is designed to test the patience of the most fervent claret and blue devotee.

The completed puzzle provides a superb panoramic view of a packed Villa Park is it looks today - and it provides a true test of patience.

I reckon a fair few supporters have tried to spot themselves in the crowd while trying to figure out the 1,000-piece puzzle!

4] Top Trumps

This Villa version of the Top Trumps game - initially focussed on cars and aeroplanes - was issued in 2010 and was has proved hugely popular with young Villans.

Essentially, each card contains a photo of a past or present Villa star, together with his ratings in various aspects of football.

The idea is to win as many cards as possible from your opponent.

5] Playing Cards

Adult supporters will no doubt prefer more traditional card games - and the club combined with leading card manufacturers Waddingtons to produce a claret-and-blue-themed pack of playing cards.

Once again, the cards featured current players and club legends, including Gordon Cowans and Paul McGrath.

6] Interactive Villa

In 1996 Villa embarked on a major project - our first multimedia CD-ROM.

Villa Interactive provided supporters with "a unique view of the club".

The features included 45 minutes of video, a detailed analysis of that season's squad plus former favourites, virtual reality sections and hundreds of photographs - many of them accompanied by commentary from Villa's former club photographer Terry Weir.

7] Planet Villa

Technology has progressed so rapidly that this DVD was literally on a different planet from that CD-ROM 14 years earlier.

Planet Villa is a fun way of learning about Villa - presented in an A-Z of all things claret and blue.

It's a production which covers the whole spectrum, from Agbonlahor to Yorke.

8] Advent Calendar

Here's another recent variation on a traditional theme. Every day from December 1 until Christmas Eve, kids just love opening the windows on their advent calendars to see what goodies are inside.

Over the past few years, young Villa fans have been able to combine the festive spirit with their favourite team following the introduction of the Aston Villa advent calendar.

And if Santa leaves some claret and blue gifts, all the better!

9] Sliding Puzzle

What a novel marketing idea - a sliding puzzle featuring an image of Villa players celebrating.

It was devised by the club's Hospitality and Events as a gift for corporate guests.
