Villa were in full flow, with Stewart Downing, Stiliyan Petrov and James Milner bagging the vital goals.

It was Milner's final game, of course, before he moved to Manchester City but he left Villa fans with a parting gift before a stunning send-off on being subbed late in the game.

It was also great to see Marc Albrighton and Ciaran Clark, previously pivotal figures in the all-conquering reserve side, having big parts to play.

The duo were named in an attacking Villa starting line-up, with Ashley Young tucked behind John Carew in a 4-4-1-1 formation.

While Clark was flawless at the back, Albrighton terrorised the Hammers defence all afternoon and had a hand in all three goals on his inaugural top-flight start.
