Euro 2012 Watch: Given says Ireland must roar against Spain

By Paul Brown

Villa No.1 Shay Given believes Republic of Ireland must follow the lead of England as they get set to face Spain in Euro 2012.

Following an opening game defeat to Croatia, pundits have already written off Ireland's chances with big clashes against Spain and Italy to come.

But Given insists confidence is high ahead of the terrific double header.

Spain are incredibly tough opponents but England managed to beat them in a friendly at Wembley in November 2011.

This gives the boys in green hope ahead of Thursday's encounter, insists Given.

He said: "We know what's coming. We've just got to try and combat that.

"We saw England beat Spain 1-0 a few months ago at Wembley, so we can take things from that and how they played and hopefully we can do something similar.

"We've got to stop the whole team - you don't concentrate on one of their players. They've very good on the ball, they're a fantastic team and if you give them time and space on the ball they're going to pick you off.

"We can hurt them, hopefully. We won't be trying to get everybody behind the ball, we'll try and cause them some problems as well.

"One of the biggest things will probably be set-pieces. They're renowned for maybe not being the biggest team in the competition and we've got some big players in our team, so if we get some of the right deliveries in there, as we saw against Croatia with the goal we scored, we've got the players who can get onto to balls in the box.

"We hope this situation will bring the best out of us. Sometimes in the past when everyone has given up on us we've come out fighting and proved that we're a decent team and we have to do that again, of course, because we're all disappointed after the weekend.

"There was such a huge build up and huge hype and the whole country was buzzing. Then we saw the atmosphere was absolutely unbelievable, the fans were amazing and it was just a real flatness in the changing-room afterwards.

"The good thing about football is that you've always got another game to come along and obviously in the Euros they come quite fast. They don't come any bigger than the world champions.

"It's a huge game, of course, and we have to get something from the game or we're going to be going home early."
