Given fitness boost ahead of Republic of Ireland Euro 2012 opener
![]()
The sight of Given looking fresh and ready allays fears over his fitness ahead of their opening Euro 2012 game against Croatia on Sunday. Given has taken it easy for most of the week, having been troubled by a variety of niggles, from a calf strain to a knee injury and even blisters. However, he arrived with his boots this morning and took part in drills before playing a lively 11-aside in what Giovanni Trapattoni reiterated was his starting line-up in Poznan, barring injuries. Third-choice goalkeeper David Forde was the one to make way. Republic of Ireland face Croatia on Sunday June 10 [KO 7.45pm], Spain on Thursday June 14 [KO 7.45pm] and Italy on Monday June 18 [KO 7.45pm]. Given is joined in the squad by Richard Dunne, who will compete in his first major tournament for his country.
