Carruthers: No easing off from me after big breakthrough

By Dan Harrison

Samir Carruthers has promised he won't ease off in his quest for a successful Villa career despite making his big breakthrough this season.

Carruthers has been on the bench for Villa's last eight Barclays Premier League games and made cameo appearances against Liverpool, Manchester United and West Bromwich Albion.

The 19-year-old midfielder says it has been "such an honour" to be involved with the senior set-up.

There is still plenty for Carruthers to play for this term with Thursday's national reserves play-off final against Manchester United and Sunday's top-flight finale against Norwich City.

And he insists there will be no let-up in his quest to become a claret and blue star.

"It is nice to get compliments but you can't ease up and say 'that's it, I'm sorted'," said the Republic of Ireland U19 international.

"You've got to keep going and you want more compliments and minutes out there in the Premier League.

"I have really enjoyed it. It is just such an honour at the moment.

"I've just got to keep going and maybe break through next season and try and get more football in the first team hopefully."

Carruthers says his top-flight debut in the 1-1 draw against Liverpool last month came as a surprise.

But he had no problem adapting to the situation despite his legs "turning to jelly" when Alex McLeish called him over.

"I was a bit shocked when he called me because I had to be quickly focused as I was going on at such an important time in the game," Carruthers added.

"We had just conceded so we had to relieve the pressure.

"It was a good experience and another learning curve and it was just nice to get out there against players like Gerrard and Suarez. It was an honour.

"My legs turned to jelly and I was really nervous but when I got on there I was really excited.

"I didn't want them to blow the whistle because I just wanted more of it.

"It just wanted to play longer and longer but it was just a great feeling to be honest.

"You just have to get on there and play your normal game.

"You can't go into a game worrying - you've just got to play your own game."
