Lichaj: We're extra determined to succeed for captain Petrov
Eric Lichaj is extra determined to 'play for Stan' in the remaining games this season - after admitting the Villa players were moved by the show of support for Stiliyan Petrov at the weekend.
Lichaj says Petrov was in high spirits when he came into the dressing room before Saturday's 4-2 defeat against Chelsea.
The skipper had been diagnosed with acute leukaemia just 24 hours earlier.
Lichaj was given "extra energy" to go out and perform for his captain following the pre-match visit.
"He came into the dressing room before the game and said hi to the guys and he was in high spirits," said Lichaj.
"Sometimes you get a bit of extra energy in you to play for someone and on Saturday everybody played for Stan.
"But we couldn't get the result that we wanted.
"I heard the crowd on the 19th minute and it is appreciated for Stan and for everyone and hopefully he recovers well."
Lichaj, who scored Villa's second goal against Chelsea, was disappointed the team couldn't achieve a positive result as a fitting tribute to their captain.
He felt the defeat was particularly galling after such a strong fightback to restore parity from 2-0 down.
"We went down to 2-0 then brought it back and we're not feeling really good now," he added.
"We're not happy about it but we've got to move on.
"Once we'd scored the first one it felt like we were going to get another one then even when the second went it everyone felt like we could have won the game.
"But then they came back and scored what was a cheap goal from our standpoint and we were chasing the game then.
"It wasn't a good result in the end. We were looking to get something with 10 minutes to go and we didn't get anything."
