Cuellar: We need to put things right for the supporters

By Dan Harrison

Carlos Cuellar has apologised to the claret and blue faithful for the performance at Arsenal - and admitted Villa must stamp out the defensive errors that proved costly at the Emirates.

A rare blip from Cuellar in Saturday's 3-0 defeat led to Arsenal's second goal which was converted by Theo Walcott.

And the Spaniard was quick to hold his hand up following the uncharacteristic mistake.

However, he insists Villa must not let their confidence drop in the wake of the result in north London.

"We were very disappointed, everyone is gutted," said Cuellar.

"We made two very expensive mistakes at the back and conceded two goals and that killed the game.

"We are all sorry about the result, especially for the fans who came to the game.

"Arsenal pressed us very on the edge of our own box so it was difficult for us to get the ball forward but they are a very good team, with some great players and really in form.

"It was very frustrating for the whole team and for the defenders in particular.

"If you look at the two goals they were both individual mistakes.

"For Mikel Arteta's amazing free-kick you can do nothing but for the other two we were not good enough with our concentration.

"I made a mistake with one ball which led to a goal and know that is not good enough.

"We have not lost confidence though and at home it will be much better for us.

"We have the players to do well but it has just not gone right for us for some reason but we can get a response.

Cuellar says Villa must not be too downbeat about the result given the recent form of Arsene Wenger's team.

"They are a good team and they pressed us very high," he added.

"It was hard to find the space to play and we did a little bit better in the second half when we played longer balls behind their centre-backs and also to the corners to test their full-backs."
