Warnock: Young guns have been a breath of fresh air

By Dan Harrison

Stephen Warnock has hailed the buzz created by the young guns in Villa's first team squad, insisting: "They keep the place bubbling."

Academy graduates Andreas Weimann, Barry Bannan and Gary Gardner made a huge impact in Saturday's game against Fulham by combining for Villa's winning goal.

The trio are among a group of youngsters to break into the first team ranks over the past two seasons with Marc Albrighton, Chris Herd and Ciaran Clark also featuring regularly.

And Warnock reckons the injection of youth into the senior setup has been a breath of fresh air on and off the pitch.

"The young lads have managed to keep themselves sharp and they keep the place bubbling around the training ground," said the defender.

"They're lively lads, they like to keep all the older players going and give out a lot of banter.

"It's great for the atmosphere, but they also know how to put the performances in on the pitch.

"You look at Marc and Barry and Gary and obviously Andi, these are good players.

"They need time though, you can't just throw them in straight away and expect big things of them.

"They are young players and they need a bit of time, but they're really good."

Warnock was delighted for 20-year-old striker Weimann after he opened his claret and blue account.

But the full-back also took great personal satisfaction from helping Villa to clean sheet.

"The end of the match was great, especially for Andi who's been proving himself in the reserves," added the former Liverpool player.

"He's scored a hell of a lot of goals of late, we see him every day and we know what he can do.

"It's a typical goal for him. He's an old fashioned fox-in-the-box type.

"That's why it was important for us to get that clean sheet. It lays a foundation for something like that to happen.

"From a defensive point of view, I think Shay only had to make one save which is great.

"I don't think he's had too much to do in the last couple of games so we're trying to work on that. Hopefully it's coming out now."
