Match report: Villa Res 7-1 Wolves Res

By Dan Harrison at Bodymoor Heath

A magnificent seven sent Villa storming back to the top of the Barclays Premier League South in emphatic fashion.

Andreas Weimann notched a hat-trick, while Nathan Delfouneso, Barry Bannan (2) and Gary Gardner all enhanced their first team prospects by getting among the goals.

Villa were rocked after just 18 seconds of this astonishing encounter when Jake Cassidy caught the defence napping to put Wolves ahead.

But the home team, who fielded an experienced starting XI, were quick to hit back through Weimann before producing an attacking masterclass.

Watching on from the sidelines, manager Alex McLeish will have been delighted with the way in which Villa carved open the Black Country side's defence time after time.

Two minutes after Cassidy's opener, Weimann restored parity, finding himself one-on-one with goalkeeper Aaron McCarey before expertly finishing.

Kevin MacDonald's men were ruthless from there on.

Gardner hit the crossbar with a header from Bannan's corner and Delfouneso's angled shot was saved by McCarey.

The England U21 striker had his reward on 39 minutes, his goal coming after a menacing burst forward from new signing Enda Stevens.

Driving inside from the left flank, the full-back's miscued effort found its way through to Delfouneso who produced an instinctive finish from around eight yards.

To make matters worse for Wolves, Jack Price saw red on 41 minutes for handling on the line.

It allowed Bannan to step up and score goal number three from the penalty spot.

The opportunities kept on coming after the break and Samir Carruthers orchestrated the fourth by releasing Delfouneso in space on the left.

McCarey charged down Delfouneso's effort but Bannan followed up to rifle in the rebound on 62 minutes.

Substitute Ebby Nelson-Addy, who replaced returning right-back Eric Lichaj at half-time, teed up Weimann to slot across goal from a tight angle on 64 minutes.

Then, six minutes from time, Gardner delivered the final touch to steer home Daniel Johnson's left-wing cross.

The magnificent seven was complete on 86 minutes when hat-trick hero Weimann made a driving run across the box and guided a left-foot shot into the bottom corner.
