Match report: Watford U18s 1-4 Villa U18s
Tony McAndrew was pleased to see Villa's hard work pay off as they began 2012 in style with a convincing win at Watford.
McAndrew revealed his team had gone back to basics in order to improve on an erratic first half of the season.
Wide players Jordan Graham and Josh Barton were at the heart of Villa's best attacks as they kicked off the calendar year with a superb display.
Two second-half goals from Graham sealed a brilliant win after Callum Robinson added to Malcolm Melvin's opening strike.
"It was very pleasing," said McAndrew. "The performance was excellent and it was probably the best we've played.
"Again I am disappointed that we haven't kept a clean sheet as it was a poor goal we gave away.
"It is something we have talked about and something we have worked on.
"But we have to take the positives and it was a great performance.
"We looked pretty solid at the back and passed the ball really well.
"Some of the crosses that Jordan and Josh put into the box were terrific and the movement and Callum were pleasing as it was something we have worked on since we've come back from the Christmas break.
"We've done a lot of work on it and it was pleasing to see it come to fruition."
