NextGenSeries report: Fenerbahce U19s 1-2 Villa U19s

Villa came from behind to defeat Fenerbahce in Istanbul and continue their push for the NextGen Series knockout stages.

A hard-fought victory over the Turkish side at the Maltepe Stadium saw the claret and blues maintain their grip on second spot in Group 3 of the prestigious European U19 tournament ahead of next Wednesday's important clash against third-placed Rosenborg at Villa Park.

All of the goals came in the second-half - a Derrick Williams own goal putting the hosts ahead before Tony McAndrew's team responded through Daniel Johnson and Lewis Kinsella.

There were three changes to the Villa side that inflicted a 4-0 defeat on Fenerbahce in last month's corresponding fixture.

Under-18s skipper Richard Bryan replaced Janoi Donacien in central defence, Joshua Webb made way for Ebby Nelson-Addy at right-back while Connor Taylor came in for Callum Robinson up front.

It was 19-year-old forward Taylor who had Villa's best chance early on when he headed wide from close range.

The Turks rattled the woodwork in the 19th minute but overall the Young Lions edged a tight first-half.

But Fenerbahce - who have now lost all four of their group games - went ahead on the hour mark when Republic of Ireland U19 defender Williams scored an unfortunate own goal.

It took Villa just three minutes to hit back, though, when Johnson equalised to add to his superb strike against the same opposition in his previous NextGen outing.

The winning goal arrived 10 minutes from time with 17-year-old full-back Kinsella netting his first of the campaign.

Villa take on Norwegian aces Rosenborg at Villa Park next Wednesday in a potentially crucial NextGen Series clash.
