Match report: Villa U18s 11-3 MK Dons U18s

By Dan Harrison

Tony McAndrew hailed the ruthless finishing of his Villa players - but insists the young guns must keep their feet on the ground.

The U18s returned to winning ways with a storming success over the MK Dons at Bodymoor Heath.

Michael Drennan bagged a hat-trick while there were braces for Connor Taylor, Josh Barton and Umit Eminoglu.

There were also goals for Liam Bateman and Janoi Donacien to end Villa's six-match winless sequence.

Although McAndrew was delighted with the improvement show by his squad, he is adamant they must not get carried away.

He said: "We played well. The finishing was really good and some lads hit a bit of form.

"Connor Taylor's second half header was one of the best goals - a good passing move from the back and a good cross before Connor planted the header in.

"Mickey Drennan's finishing was excellent - he looked really sharp. He's been back now for three or four weeks and this way his first start for the youth team.

"He scored a hat-trick in the first half and had another disallowed for offside.

"It was an improvement as the scoreline would suggest but again I wasn't completely happy.

"The three goals we conceded were very poor so there is still a bit of work to do."

McAndrew says his squad were told "a few home truths" last week, admitting recent performances were well below the standards expected by Villa's academy staff.

He added: "We sat them down collectively and individually last week and told them a few home truths and pull no punches. We suggested they needed to improve.

"Don't get me wrong, Saturday's performance was decent but we expect things like that with the standards we set at this academy.

"I am really, really happy about it but there was a lot of hard talking last week to some of these young lads and I am disappointed we've had to do that.

"We did play some really good football and the finishing was excellent. The staff here expect it all the time.

"It is about keeping them level-headed - can they do it again if they play for the reserves on Tuesday?

"Can they do it again two weeks on Saturday? Can they do it again in Fenerbahce?

"These are the real tests. I want to see more of that and the whole academy does."

VILLA: Barrett, Bateman, Bryan, Donacien, Kinsella, Barton, Ward, Melvin, Robinson, Drennan, Eminoglu. Subs: Taylor [for Drennan, HT], Coton [for Barrett, 60], Webb [for Kinsella, HT], M Watkins, Graham.
