Match report: Tottenham U18s 1-1 Villa U18s

Tony McAndrew was thrilled with the response from his young guns as Josh Barton's strike gave Villa a point which ended a three-match losing run.

Northern Irish winger Barton gave the claret and blues the lead after three minutes with a well-struck 25-yard drive which beat Spurs keeper Billy Granger at the near post.

The home side hit back on 73 minutes when Dominic Ball headed home Lee Angol's cross from six yards.

Nevertheless, it was a much improved performance from Villa - one which delighted coach McAndrew.

He said: "There was a massive improvement when we didn't have the ball.

"The stuff we played when we did have the ball in the last couple of games was all right.

"But we got everything right this weekend. We put pressure on them when we didn't have the ball.

"We got in defensive positions that we haven't been doing and we played some really good football when we had the ball. It was a cracking game.

"I'm delighted with the response to the training over the last couple of weeks and to the last three results. It shows the players have got some character."

VILLA: Barrett, Jenkins, Bryan, Kinsella, Caira, Barton, Melvin, Ward, Carruthers, Darkin, Taylor. Subs: Juan Serrano [for Kinsella, 63], Coton, Eminoglu [for Darkin, 78], Nelson [for Barton, 85], Williams.
