Match report: Charlton U18s 3-2 Villa 18s

By Dan Harrison

Tony McAndrew has ordered his players to "go back to basics" after a second consecutive Barclays Premier Academy League defeat.

Villa's U18 coach was disappointed with his team's defending in the 3-2 defeat at Charlton and insists they need to raise their standards.

The boys in claret and blue had to soak up a lot of pressure in the early stages but managed to take the lead thanks to some opportunism from Callum Robinson.

However, the Addicks equalised and then stormed into the lead before Charlie Ward pulled one back for the away side from a free-kick.

McAndrew said: "It was a little bit better but it was still a long way off the standards this academy sets.

"We have an inability to defend at the moment and it is something we need to address quickly.

"Callum Robinson put a good shift in and he nicked a short backpass and produced a great finish from just outside the box.

"But we proceeded to commit suicide for the equaliser and ended up conceding so we were disappointed with that one.

"The second was a good strike from the free-kick by Charlie Ward.

"We had little bits of play but not a lot and we need to go right back to basics. That is what we are going to do."

Villa return to action against Fulham at Bodymoor Heath on Saturday September 17.

VILLA: Barrett, Jenkins, Webb, Melvin, Bryan, Donacien, Graham, Ward, Robinson, Juan Serrano, Grealish. Subs: Barton (for Grealish, 72), Hill, Darkin (for Juan Serrano, 45), Bateman, Nelson (Robinson, 72).
