Young has sights set on double figures after Wigan wonder strike

By Dan Harrison

Ashley Young wants to take his personal goal tally in to double figures after firing Villa to a point against Wigan.

The forward struck with a delightful free-kick in the first-half in Saturday's 1-1 draw against the Latics to cancel out Charles N'Zogbia's early effort.

It was Young's ninth goal in all competitions this term and Villa's top scorer has his sights set on reaching double figures with two games remaining.

Young thought his 17th minute strike would give Villa the momentum to go on and win the game - but he was disappointed with the team's failure to turn one point into three.

"I'd be delighted to get into double figures - we've got two games left so fingers crossed I can do that," he told AVTV.

"I had an opportunity to score from the free-kick and I asked Stan to touch it.

"I don't think the wall was anywhere near 10 yards back but I think that might have worked in my favour.

"As soon as I touched it I knew which way it was going to go and luckily for me it has gone in and I think that set on the road to get back in to the game and getting another goal which obviously didn't come.

"We are disappointed it didn't come but we got a point which is vitally important."

Young believes Villa had enough opportunities to bag a winner after the break before being forced to settle for a point.

"We had chances to score the second goal and I think we should have got the three points but it wasn't to be," he added.

"At this stage of the season getting any point is vitally important and to pick up another point, it looks like we are definitely safe now which is what we are all trying to do."
