Marshall backing Villa to come good with late top-flight surge

By Paul Brown

Andy Marshall insists Villa "are not going to be part" of a scrap for survival in the closing weeks of the current top-flight campaign.

Marshall has backed Villa to come good and charge up the Barclays Premier League table.

The veteran goalkeeper, who has just signed a new one-year deal, says the players are "up for it" as they look to move away from the relegation trapdoor.

The 35-year-old says the lads are "all in it together" as they hunt results, starting this weekend against Everton.

He said: "The lads are up for it, up for the fight that's ahead.

"It's a territory we haven't been used to over the past few years because we have been challenging at the top end of the table. It is something that is new but you look at the quality in the changing room, it's more than capable of getting out of the situation it's in.

"We have seen big teams go down before, of course, but we're not going to be part of that.

"We want to get out of that as quickly as possible.

"We're all in it together - all the lads. If you're not up for the fight and not pulling all together, it makes it very difficult. We most certainly are and we aim to prove it."

Marshall insists he's ready to step in if called upon by manager Gerard Houllier, after revealing his own appetite for the game has increased during his time at Villa.

He called current custodian Brad Friedel an "inspiration" and says the USA ace's dedication to his art has given him a new lease of life.

He added: "He has done fantastically well and I must say he is an inspiration for me.

"I look at him at the age he is and I see the way he trains, the way he conducts himself, he's magnificent.

"It's been great to be at Villa and work under Brad and extend my career. Before I arrived here I thought I was heading for my final two years but now I feel I have another two or three left in me. That's down to seeing Brad as a person on and off the field."
