Keeper Marshall signs new one-year contract

By Dan Harrison

Andy Marshall has extended his stay at Villa by signing a new one-year contract.

The veteran goalkeeper's claret and blue career will continue into a third season after he put pen to paper on a new deal.

Although the 35-year-old is yet to make a first team appearance at Villa he has held down the number two keeper's slot since the turn of the year.

Marshall's experience has been a valuable asset to the squad since his arrival in summer 2009 and he is delighted to sign up for another 12 months.

"This is a fantastic club to be at," he said. "To be able to renew my contract and get a third year, I am absolutely delighted.

"I've been fortunate enough to be sat behind Brad Friedel for the last two years and hopefully now I can push on and see if I can get to the next level."

The former Norwich City, Millwall and Coventry custodian was the regular keeper for Villa's reserves last term but he has been on the bench for the first team since Brad Guzan moved to Hull on loan at the beginning of 2011.

He admits being involved on matchdays with the first team has given him great satisfaction.

"As a footballer you want to be part of the matchday situations, whether you are playing or as a substitute," Marshall said.

"Everyone wants to play but being behind Brad you also have to be realistic of the level he is playing at.

"The opportunity isn't going to come along very easily. I have just enjoyed being involved with the boys and being back in matchday situations."

Marshall has also played an influential role in the development of young keepers Elliot Parish and Benjamin Siegrist.

The man from Bury St Edmunds, who played in the 2004 FA Cup final for Millwall, has enjoyed passing on his experience to the future stars.

"I enjoy helping coach these boys, it is something I want to do," he added. "I want to help bring through the young keepers - the same as Brad does.

"We can pass on the experience that we've got along with Rafa Gonzalez. It can only help educate the young boys that are coming through."
