Johnson reveals Villa Park goal joy after inspirational display
Daniel Johnson's first Villa Park goal was one to remember - and the academy skipper revealed his delight at being able to share the magic moment with his mum.
The midfield ace revealed his first thought after giving Villa the lead in Sunday's FA Youth Cup victory over Middlesbrough was to acknowledge his mother, who was sat amongst the claret and blue faithful in the Trinity Road stand.
Johnson produced a true captain's performance to help Tony McAndrew's team book a semi-final spot.
He opened the scoring with a rasping left-foot drive from outside the box as Villa earned a 3-1 win.
"Lucky for me the ball came to me at the edge of the box and the only thing that came to mind was to shoot," he told AVTV. "I got it out of my feet and I got it in the bottom corner.
"The only thing that came to mind was to wave at my mum. That was my first thought and then all of the lads jumped on me. It was a great feeling.
"She saw me. I said to her I am going to spot you before the game and if I score I'll look straight at you.
"It is my first goal here so it was very special and it was a good goal. Hopefully I'll get more here and get a lot more chances."
Johnson was a proud skipper after Sunday's success and he admitted the squad are eagerly awaiting the outcome of this week's clash between Leicester City and Sheffield United.
The winner of that tie will face Villa in a two-leg semi-final, with the first match set to take place at Villa Park.
"I am proud of the lads because at one stage of the game they had a lot of the ball so we just had to stick together and get tight and start pressing," Johnson added.
"When we went in at half-time Tony just said stay on top and keep up the pressure.
"Eventually we did that - Samir got the ball in the box and Graham was there at the back post to volley it in and we went 2-0 up.
"Everyone was brilliant. We all stuck together and did the job and now we are just looking forward to the semi-finals."
