Match report: Villa Res 10-1 Arsenal Res

By Dan Harrison

Villa produced an attacking masterclass to stun Arsenal in a sensational top-of-the-table clash at Hinckley.

Chris Herd bagged a hat-trick, while there were happy returns for Gary Gardner and Andreas Weimann, who both scored twice on their comebacks from long-term injury lay-offs.

Nathan Delfouneso also helped himself to a brace, with Jonathan Hogg getting in on the goalcoring act too.

It was a stunning performance from the claret and blues to top the Southern Group on goal difference.

Within 11 minutes, Villa found themselves a goal up and a man up.

Gardner gave Kevin MacDonald's team a 10th minute lead, with a long-range effort after capitalising on goalkeeper James Shea's poor clearance.

Seconds later the visitors had George Brislen-Hall sent off for a rash tackle on Jonathan Hogg.

Things got a whole lot worse for Neil Banfield's men when Weimann finished off a fine Villa move to double the advantage on 17 minutes.

It started on the left when Delfouneso made strong run, picked out Gardner on the opposite flank and Weimann arrived at the back post to tap in the midfielder's precise delivery.

And when Herd converted Nathan Baker's knockdown from close range five minutes before the break, the claret and blues were in dreamland.

Two minutes later Baker supplied yet another knockdown from Gardner's corner, allowing Hogg to thump home a fourth from the edge of the box.

There was still time for a fifth before half-time. Gardner coolly slotted home a penalty kick in stoppage time after Oguzhan Ozyakup handled inside the box.

On 64 minutes, Herd headed home a corner from substitute Harry Forrester and eight minutes later Delfouneso hit number seven when he tucked away a low cross from Weimann.

Then a wonderful flurry in the closing minutes took Villa into double figures.

Delfouneso's second came when he latched on to Durrell Berry's through ball and slotted underneath Shea.

Gunners substitute Ronie Deacon netted a consolation 10 minutes from time with a header from a Jay Emmanuel-Thomas left-wing free-kick.

Herd completed his hat-trick on 85 minutes with a close-range header after a mass goalmouth scramble.

And the scoring was rounded off by Weimann two minutes from the end after another storming run from Delfouneso.

The England U21 striker ran virtually the full length of the pitch, rounded Shea and had his shot blocked on the line, but Weimann was there to score the rebound.
