Match report: Arsenal Res 0-2 Villa Res

By Dan Harrison

Nathan Delfouneso and Samir Carruthers scored as Villa produced a dominant performance in this top-of-the-table clash.

Two first-half goals were enough to seal a comprehensive victory for Kevin MacDonald's men, who were the better side throughout at Arsenal's London Colney training ground.

A strong Villa line-up, featuring the likes of Delfouneso, Marc Albrighton, Barry Bannan and Brad Guzan, made their experience count against the young Gunners.

Albrighton made his return to action after missing Sunday's Second City derby through suspension and the winger gave the Arsenal defence a torrid afternoon.

In the early stages, the 20-year-old found Shane Lowry unmarked at the back post but the Australian defender volleyed wide across goal.

There was also an early opportunity for Delfouneso who headed Bannan's right-wing corner into the side netting.

However, Delfouneso went one better on the 30 minute mark to round off a fine team move.

The striker reacted quickly to steer Carruthers' precise centre into the far corner, rounding off a fine sequence of passing.

Goalkeeper Guzan was called into action to deny Chuks Aneke and Oguzhan Ozyakup from close range.

But Villa pressed home their dominance before the break when Albrighton floated in another sumptuous cross from the right and Carruthers arrived perfectly to head into James Shea's bottom corner.

There was no let-up from the Tamworth-born winger after the break, teeing up Jonathan Hogg at the back post, only for the midfielder to head just wide.

Derrick Williams also headed off target when he met Hogg's lofted pass.

Guzan was called into action once in the second-half, saving Gilles Sunnu's effort with his legs.

But it was a convincing victory for Villa, who maintained their spot at the top of the Barclays Premier Academy League Southern Group.
