Luke Young said going in at half-time level rather than ahead was a big factor in Villa's defeat to Tottenham.

The reliable right-back thinks it might have been a different story if Gerard Houllier's men had been able to see out the first period.

Instead, Villa went down courtesy of two Rafael Van Der Vaart efforts.

In spite of the former Real Madrid midfielder's column inches in the following day's newspapers, Young was adamant Peter Crouch made the difference.

He said: "The equalising goal was a big factor in the game.

"Obviously we had a few minutes to see out and we couldn't.

"Going into the dressing room level rather than ahead after such a good half where we were on top was disappointing.

"Van Der Vaart will go down as the match-winner. When you lose 2-1 to Tottenham, you expect to be cut up with some super play but we lost to two balls into the air to Peter Crouch

"You take him out of the side and I think we would have come away with something."

Young also paid tribute to Emile Heskey, who worked tirelessly for the side and created the opening goal, before being brought off after sustaining a deadleg.

He added: "That's what he does for us.

"Big Em gives you absolutely everything he's got, every time he plays.

"While he was on, he didn't give them a second's breather.

"He shut down the defender, made him make a mistake, nicked the ball off him, produced the cross and we then got the goal.

"It was disappointing that he had to go off because he was causing them a lot of problems."
