Petrov looking to spring a surprise on England

By Dan Harrison

Stiliyan Petrov hopes to spring a surprise on England tomorrow night when he kicks off his final international qualification campaign with Bulgaria.

Petrov is set to lead his nation out at Wembley in the opening round of Euro 2012 qualifiers.

The Group G clash could bring the midfielder up against Villa team-mate Ashley Young, who has been named in the England squad.

Although the 96-cap star knows Bulgaria face tall order, he is relishing the chance to have one last crack at reaching a major tournament.

Bulgaria's task has been made tougher by the retirement of Manchester United striker Dimitar Berbatov and first choice goalkeeper Dimitar Ivankov.

"It is going to be a hard game for us," said Petrov. "We don't have any illusions that it is going to be any easy game.

"We know how strong England are. Obviously they are the favourites in this group. But we will do our best and try and take something from the game.

"We know that we need to be very organised and concentrate on this game.

"I hope we can take something but we know it is going to be very hard, especially now the main goalkeeper has retired and Dimitar Berbatov has retired.

"So we don't have as many talented players with them stepping out of the national team.

"The main priority is for the team to play well and to perform.

"Maybe we don't have that much power to go and qualify but we all enjoy going back and playing for the national team and we hope we can qualify.

"Also it is my last campaign. If we qualify for the European Championships I will see it through, but if not I will wish the boys all the best.

"So it is my last campaign. I will push as hard as I can and we will try to qualify."

The Three Lions are keen to prove a point after a disappointing showing at the World Cup in South Africa this summer.

Petrov admits this factor is something else for his team-mates to be mindful of.

"We know they had a disappointing World Cup," he added. "They are going to show it to the fans and they will be trying to win the game.

"It could go both ways. It could be good for us, it could be bad for us and I hope it ends up being good for us."
