Petrov calls for a Rapid response

Stiliyan Petrov has urged his team-mates to come out fighting against Rapid Vienna, to prove the crushing defeat to Newcastle was a one-off. The skipper insists Villa must put the 6-0 loss behind them quickly and focus on getting things right in Thursday night's Europa League play-off second leg. Villa go into the tie in a good position, having bagged a 1-1 draw and a potentially crucial away goal in the Austrian capital last week. Petrov offered a typically honest assessment of the display at St James' Park and is keen for the team to banish memories of the defeat as quickly as possible. He told AVTV: "It is not a nice feeling. We wish the next game could come tomorrow so we could show everybody it was a one-off. "Nobody likes to lose, especially with a result like that. So we'll be raring to go back again and start again. "The season is ahead of us and we just need to perform and get better and better. "We take all the responsibility. We play really brilliant the one week, then come all the way up here and play really poorly. "We need to get that balance and sometimes we just need to battle our way through. "We started very well but we missed a penalty and everything went against us. "We weren't defending well enough, we didn't close people quick enough, we were on the back foot and we gave them enough time. "We conceded six goals so it is up to us now to change all this - what we have done wrong." Petrov concedes Villa were a little naive in their approach to Sunday's clash. And the Bulgarian midfielder has called for a show of belief from his colleagues as they look for an immediate response from the setback. The captain said: "We will be a changed side in the next game. We have the quality but we were probably a little bit naive. "We thought we were going to come over here and get an easy game after our performance last week [against West Ham]. "But last week was last week and we need to be prepared for every single game. "We are really disappointed because our defensive record has been great. "We have been defending as a team really well and we have been really strong, but we missed that here. "I said before, we have a belief. That is the main thing and we know we can do better but we need to avoid this. "If we want to achieve something we need to avoid these games. We need to be better, we need to show more concentration and we need to see these games through." With so much to play for this season, Petrov insists it is too early for Villa to let their heads drop. He added: "It is a long season - you cannot just put your head down now. "We have just started now and it is going to be a long season. It is an odd game we will see where we are going to end up." Keywords
