Ashley Young enhanced his chances of becoming a regular in Fabio Capello's new-look England setup with a lively display in the 2-1 victory over Hungary.

The Villa ace was introduced as one of four half-time substitutes in the Wembley clash and gave an excellent account of himself on the left hand side of the Three Lions midfield.

Young, winning his eighth senior international cap, played a big part in the build-up to England's winning strike, which was converted by skipper Steven Gerrard.

And the 25-year-old linked up well with Arsenal left-back Kieran Gibbs, giving the Hungarian defenders plenty to think about.

James Milner also featured in the clash, replacing Wayne Rooney after 66 minutes.

After Capello's team struggled break the deadlock in the first period, Young came off the bench, along with Gibbs, Michael Dawson and Bobby Zamora.

It didn't take long for Young to make an impact on the left flank.

Just six minutes into the second-half, he showed his marker a clean pair of heels and put in a dangerous low cross which was hacked clear from the six-yard box.

But the visitors took the lead in controversial circumstances on 62 minutes.

Vladimir Koman latched on to a cross from Fulham's Zoltan Gera and the substitute's shot was adjudged to have crossed the line, despite replays showing otherwise.

However, England staged a fightback, with Gerrard producing two top class strikes in the space of four minutes.

On 69 minutes, the Liverpool star rifled home a thunderous shot from the edge of the box and, moments later, he collected Young's low cross and weaved his way through the Hungary defence to slot home the winner from close range.

Meanwhile, Stiliyan Petrov's Bulgaria suffered a 1-0 defeat against Russia in a pre-season friendly at Zenit St Petersburg's Petrovsky Stadium.

Roman Shirokov scored for the Russians after six minutes. Petrov was replaced by Zaharin Sirakov with a minute left.

At St Mirren Park, Barry Bannan impressed for Scotland under-21s, who drew 1-1 with Sweden.

Bannan was at the heart of some of Scotland's best play, as David Wotherspoon grabbed a late equaliser.

Andreas Weimann was a second-half substitute as Austrian under-21s drew 3-3 with Belarus in their Euro 2011 qualifier.

The Austrians were leading 3-1 with 15 minutes to go but were pegged back by two late goals.
