Davies: Classy Carragher
By Paul Brown

Villa defender Curtis Davies believes Jamie Carragher could be the man to keep out USA because he'll be like a rash with their strikers.

Carragher faces a fight with Ledley King in the battle to partner John Terry in England's opening group game of the World Cup, with Rio Ferdinand out of the summer showpiece with a knee injury.

Davies is a big admirer of Carragher because he gives forwards no time in possession and has developed into one of the best stoppers in the game.

He said: "He started as a full-back and played for Liverpool very early on in his career, which was a massive achievement.

"As he's got older, he's moved to centre-half. A lot of people say that small centre-halves are likely to struggle but he's one of the toughest in the business.

"He's like a rash. When someone takes him on one-on-one, there's no-one better.

"When he wins the ball, he doesn't get rid of it either, he uses it sensibly."

Meanwhile, former Villa skipper Martin Laursen insists that Wayne Rooney is the main man for England this summer - not for his terrific skill and quality - but because of his terrific heart for the battle.

He said: "Rooney is the one that stands out. He has done brilliantly for Manchester United and England over the past few years.

"He has unbelievable skill and obvious talent but people don't realise how hard he works. It's not just about creating chances and scoring goals.

"He defends from the front and that's so important in a successful side.

"Going forward, he can make goals from anywhere."
