MON's Newcastle Preview

Martin O'Neill accepts the relegation battle is the big talking point this weekend - but insists he is only interested in his team's bid for fifth. He told AVTV: "They are billing it as Survival Sunday and I accept the relegation battle is obviously very fascinating. "We are embroiled in it because we have faced Hull, Middlesbrough and Newcastle in the past few weeks. From that point of view, we have had a big part to play in the latter stages. "It now comes down to the last game but I don't think Newcastle will feel, if they lose to us, that we were the reason they are no longer in the Barclays Premier League. "The fact is they can beat us and still go down. That particular scenario will be frustrating for them - bearing in mind this is a club of great size and ambition - who were contesting Champions League a few years ago. "But they will still feel they aren't beaten - with one game remaining. "From our point of view, we want to go and win for ourselves. The title has already been decided and relegation is the really big issue on Sunday but we have plenty to play for ourselves. We want to finish fifth and the ironic thing is we aren't guaranteed that - even if we win." |
