Villa went out of the FA Youth Cup as Arsenal showed amazing powers of recovery to win the third round tie.

Star striker James Collins twice put Villa in front but twice Rhys Murphy equalised for the visitors.

And with 10 minutes remaining, Jay Thomas won the game for the Gunners as he fired in an impressive left-foot effort to break the hearts of the Young Lions.


6mins - GOAL - Collins opened the scoring, pouncing on a weak punch out by goalkeeper Shea. The goal was initially set up by a Dyer cross.

10mins - Villa created more pressure but Delfouneso's dangerous cross from the right was cleared.

12mins - Baker's close-range shot was blocked as the claret and blue troops looked to double their advantage.

15mins - GOAL - Devlin did brilliantly to make a double save before Murphy levelled matters for the Gunners.

30mins - Baker did well to cover Blythe's weak backpass with Thomas looking to pounce for the visitors.

32mins - Collins fired a shot wide of Shea's right-hand post.

34mins - Baker cleared real danger as Lansbury did well on the wing before firing in an impressive centre.

38mins - Sunu appealed for a handball as his right-foot shot ricocheted into Devlin's arms.

41mins - GOAL - Collins scored his second of the night with a fierce left-foot drive from just inside the box, after good work from Forrester.

48mins - Thomas drove into the area but lost control of the ball at the vital moment.

51mins - Sunu broke free but his final effort was easily saved by Devlin as his finish didn't match his build-up play.

52mins - Thomas played a one-two with Murphy before firing a low shot towards goal - but Devlin was at his agile best to stop the effort.

59mins - Baker showed pace and power to get an excellent tackle in on Murphy as the Arsenal forward looked to level matters.

64mins - SUBSTITUTION - Watt for Sunu

68mins - Frimpong saw a long-range right-foot effort fly wide of Devlin's post.

71mins - Devlin saved Villa with a brilliant save from a Murphy right-foot shot.

73mins - BOOKING - Ayling

75mins - GOAL - Murphy equalised for the visitors with his second of the night, after Devlin had saved Watt's initial effort.

78mins - SUBSTITUTION - Grocott for Baker.

80mins - GOAL - Thomas scored with his left-foot after a well-placed pass from Murphy.
