From The Manager
To add to the matchday experience on www.avfc.co.uk, here are Martin O'Neill's manager notes from his official matchday programme column for this evening's UEFA Cup game with MSK Zilina.
Welcome to Villa Park for what promises to be another memorable night of European football against MSK Zilina of Slovakia.
A brilliant atmosphere, combined with a superb performance, made our last UEFA Cup home match against Ajax an occasion which none of us will forget in a hurry - and we are hoping there will be plenty more of the same before the 2008-09 season has run its course.
Despite having beaten the Dutch outfit 2-1 and followed up with an equally impressive 1-0 success against Slavia Prague in their own stadium, we go into this game still needing a point to secure our progress to the competition's knockout stages.
I appreciate that if Slavia fail to beat Hamburg SV in tonight's other Group F match we will be through to the last 32 anyway - but we are certainly not approaching this game in that frame of mind. Our intention is to maintain our 100 per cent record and attempt to finish as high as possible.
The rules are such that the top two teams would play their second leg at home in the next round, and that in itself is something worth striving for.
When you look around the various groups, you get an indication of the immense quality of the UEFA Cup.
Who would have expected, for instance, to see famous clubs like Benfica and Feyenoord at the bottom of their respective sections? And even Italian giants AC Milan needed two late goals to salvage a 2-2 draw after being outfought by Portsmouth for long periods of last Thursday's game at Fratton Park.
That result left Pompey facing an uphill battle to qualify from their group, although the other two English clubs, Manchester City and Tottenham Hotspur, are both well placed to go through.
It can only be good for the game in this country to have such a strong Barclays Premier League representation in the UEFA Cup, and it would be nice to think all four of us will be in the draw for the round of 32 later this month.
We can only attend to our own affairs, however, and we are fully aware that another testing 90 minutes lies ahead of us. Zilina may only have one point secured in last week's goalless draw against Slavia Prague, but reports indicate they were a little unlucky in their opening two games, losing narrowly to both Hamburg and Ajax.
No team in our section, in fact, have yet won by any more than one goal, which makes it the tightest and most evenly-balanced of all the groups.
Compare that with Group H, where CSKA Moscow are top with nine points and a goal difference of six and bottom side Feyenoord have no points and a goal difference of minus eight, and you will see what I mean.
We anticipate another close encounter tonight.
There will certainly be no complaints if we can complete a hat-trick of single-goal victories before heading to Hamburg for our final game. Your support is greatly appreciated by us all, especially in these credit-crunch days.
