STAR MEN

Martin Laursen is bang in form after producing a sterling captain's performance in the terrific 2-1 UEFA Cup win over Ajax.

Not only did he defend superbly, he also gave Villa the perfect start, thumping home an early header.

Amr Zaki is leading the race for the Barclays Golden Boot as top scorer in the Barclays Premier League with seven goals. He is two ahead of Jermain Defoe and Fernando Torres.

Zaki scored two in his last game against Liverpool at Anfield.

CLUB CONNECTION

Originally a midfield, Kenny Swain was converted into a right-back after joining Villa from Chelsea in a £100,000 deal in December 1978.

He won medals for League Championship, European Cup and European Super Cup triumphs during his spell with the club. He even skippered the side on numerous occasions in the absence of Dennis Mortimer.

He left Villa in 1983 and had spells with Nottingham Forest, Portsmouth and Crewe Alexandra. He later moved into management, enjoying stints with Grimsby Town and Wigan.

INTERESTING STATS

Both clubs go into their ninth match of the season on the same point total they have had in each of the last two seasons at this same stage. Wigan are on eight with Villa ahead on 14.

Villa have only managed one win in six Premier League matches against Wigan. That was the 2-1 win at the JJB Stadium in December 2007.

Steve Bruce's Wigan Athletic are in danger of suffering three successive Premier League defeats - in Martin O'Neill 's 100th match in charge of Villa.

Villa were one of six clubs to leave the JJB Stadium with maximum points last season.

Maynor Figueroa has been on the field for every minute of every one of Wigan's Barclays Premier League matches this season.

Gareth Barry, Brad Friedel, Nigel Reo-Coker and Ashley Young have played every minute of every one of Villa's Barclays Premier League matches this season.

Gareth Barry is three short of 50 club career goals - all in Villa colours.

PREVIOUSLY

Goals from Curtis Davies and Gabby Agbonlahor earned Villa an impressive 2-1 victory over the Latics in December 2007. Titus Bramble opened the scoring for Wigan.
