FT: UD Marbella 0-2 VILLA

Nathan Delfouneso and Craig Gardner were on the mark as Villa ended the Spanish trip with a comfortable victory and the Estadio Municipal San Pedro Alcantara.

The pair both struck in the first-half as Villa proved simply too strong for Spanish Second Division outfit UD Marbella.

Isaiah Osbourne fired narrowly wide from 20 yards on four as Villa made a bright start in the stifling Spanish heat.

Gardner, back in a central midfield role, then went close on 13 as he sent a long range drive flashing past the post.

Shaun Maloney's dangerous cross was palmed straight to Delfouneso on 28 but the young striker headed wide as Villa continued to press.

Maloney and Zoltan Stieber linked-up well down the left four minutes later and the Hungarian's clipped cross was headed back across goal by Gardner, only for Delfouneso to fire narrowly wide.

A Villa goal was coming and it was a case of third time lucky for Delfouneso on 37 as Wayne Routledge exchanged passes with Osbourne down the right and his low cross was slotted home from close range by the Villa youngster.

Craig Gardner almost doubled the lead on 42, meeting Maloney's clever cut-back with a thunderous shot that keeper Ariza did well to block.

Gardner was not to be denied though and he made it 2-0 a minute later, supplying the faintest of touches to a Routledge cross after the impressive winger made a jinking run down the right.

Substitute Marlon Harewood headed just wide as he rose to meet Stieber's pinpoint cross from the left on 49.

Former Birmingham striker Tommy Mooney then headed wide as Marbella launched a rare counter attack.

Harewood almost added a third for Villa on 64, firing wide. And the striker teed-up Stiliyan Petrov on 79, only for the striker to volley over from the edge of the box.

Stuart Taylor spectacularly denied Asanti Moreno two minutes later to preserve Villa's lead.

Marc Albrighton then cut in from the left and fired just wide with the last chance of the night on 82.

VILLA: Taylor, Salifou, Stieber, Knight, Laursen, Routledge, Osbourne, Gardner, Maloney, Carew, Delfouneso. Subs: Petrov (for Carew ht), Harewood (for Maloney ht), Young (for Gardner 70), Baker (for Routledge 63), Albrighton (for Knight 63)
