VILLA 1-0 Odense BK

Ashley Young fired Villa into the UEFA Cup second qualifying round with a stunning Intertoto Cup strike.

The England man struck early in the second-half to calm Villa nerves against a useful and resolute Odense BK side.

And Villa were good value for the victory as they dominated the second 45.

One sour note was a horrific injury to Wilfred Bouma who was carried off after just 15 minutes - the early news from hospital suggested the Dutch international had dislocated his right ankle rather than sustained a break.

Villa made a confident start and Agbonlahor's header was deflected behind for a corner inside the first minute.

Young then jinked down the right but his near-post cross was gathered by Onyszko.

Reo-Coker made a strong run from the halfway line on five and found Young racing down the left - the England man's cross evaded Carew and Agbonlahor.

Taylor brilliantly denied Hansen on nine as the Odense man unleashed a low drive from the edge of the box.

Young almost broke the deadlock on 11 but saw his angled free-kick deflected wide for a corner.

There was then a lengthy delay as Bouma sustained a horrific injury on 12. The Dutch international was carried off to be replaced by Barry.

Haaland headed Barry's left-wing centre clear on 21 as Villa began to settle again.

Young then sent an angled free-kick from the edge of the box narrowly over the bar.

Onyszko somehow blocked Carew's point-blank header from a Young corner on 24, with Sidwell putting the rebound narrowly wide.

Sidwell was unable to find the target with a snap-shot from the edge of the box on 28.

Fall rattled the foot of the post on 29 as he chased a long ball over the top.

Carew's low effort from the edge of the box was blocked by Troest on 33.

Agbonlahor and Reo-Coker combined well down the right on 40 but the former's cross was deflected behind for a corner.

Carew then headed wide as he rose to meet Barry's right-wing corner.

Carew dragged a right-foot shot wide of the target on 44 as he pounced on Troest's mistake in the box.

Taylor tipped Hansen's dipping right-foot free-kick over the bar on 45.

Onyszko blocked Knight's towering header from Young's left-wing free-kick five minutes after the restart.

Young broke the deadlock in style a minute later, racing onto Reo-Coker's through ball, cutting in from the left and planting a rising right-foot drive into the top corner.

Sidwell sent a low right-foot drive narrowly wide on 53 as he met Agbonlahor's cut-back from the left.

Agbonlahor should have doubled Villa's lead on 63 as he turned and shot over the bar from Sidwell's through ball.

Onyszko denied Sidwell on 73, parrying a low right-foot drive from the midfielder. Hansen then blocked a low shot on the turn from Agbonlahor.

Agbonlahor went close once again on 79, making space for himself outside the box and sending a right-foot effort just wide.

Keeper Onyszko blocked Reo-Coker's rising drive on 83 as Villa looked to make absolutely sure of progressing.
