History: July 20

1885: The Football Association agreed to allow professionalism allowing the likes of Villa to attract top players and reward them for their efforts.

1966: Villa Park staged its last World Cup Group 2 match with West Germany beating Spain 2-1.

1976: After 249 appearances in Villa's colours Ian 'Chico' Hamilton was released to sign for Sheffield United.

Random Villa Fact

Tragedy struck on the night of Sunday 11th November 1923, when Villa centre-half Tommy Ball was shot dead by his landlord, George Stagg, outside his home in Perry Barr. Stagg was subsequently convicted of murder and was sentenced to hang, a sentence later commuted to life imprisonment.Ball, who made 77 appearances for Villa, is the only English top flight league player known to have been murdered.
