RIP Dave Walsh

We are sorry to learn of the passing of former Villa striker Dave Walsh, who has died at the age of 92.

Walsh was a prolific marksman in claret-and-blue, scoring 40 goals in 114 games after joining the club from neighbours West Brom for £25,000 in December 1950.

Born in Waterford, Ireland, in April 1923, Walsh began his career with Limerick United before joining Albion from Linfield in 1946.

He scored 100 goals in 174 games for the Baggies.

He made his Villa debut in a 3-0 home win over Fulham on January 13, 1951, scoring his first goal for the club in a 2-1 success over Sheffield Wednesday at the end of March.

He was also an Irish international, playing for both the Republic and Northern Ireland, and was the last survivor of the team who famously became the first foreign side to beat England on home soil, at Goodison Park in 1949.
