Report: Arsenal U18 3-3 Villa U18

Villa U18s began their play-off phase with a six-goal thriller at Arsenal.

With the other main focus now being on developing our U17 group,  Ben Petty fielded nine first-year scholars against a strong Gunners outfit.

The young lions fell behind to Nathan Tella's 13th-minute goal before equalising three minutes later courtesy of Harvey Knibbs' close-range header.

Villa conceded right on half-time after a mix-up between Mitch Clark and goalkeeper Emmanuel Idem saw Edward Nketiah fire home.

The claret and blues responded superbly in the second period dominating for long periods and deservedly scoring two excellent goals through Jake Humphries [pictured above] and the outstanding Clark.

With just minutes to go, Arsenal were awarded a soft free-kick which Idem could only parry allowing the hosts' Kostas Pileas to snatch an equaliser.

Coach Ben Petty said: "We now have the opportunity to develop some of our younger scholars in the final phase of the season.

"Today we performed admirably and our quality and energy made up for some lack of strength and physicality at times.

"The players will need to learn quickly but their attitude was excellent and they gave a performance we were proud of.

"Kelsey Mooney and Mitch Clark were outstanding players on the pitch so it was a real positive."

VILLA U18: Idem, Linley, Abdoul, Clarke, Clark, Sundman, Knibbs (Hall 59), Hayes, Mooney, Cox (Prosser 80) Humphries (Birch 89). Unused subs: Johansson, Bazeley Graham.
