 2 - 1
Date:
20/09/2003
Venue:
Villa Park
Attendance:
31,410
Referee:
Chris Foy

Villa returned to winning ways on an afternoon of firsts as both Alpay and Jlloyd Samuel opened their Claret and Blue goal accounts.

The Turkish international struck with a close-range volley on 37, while Samuel broke his duck in spectacular style ten minutes into the second-half.

Kevin Lisbie grabbed a late consolation to prompt a nervy last five minutes or so, but Villa had done enough to collect the three points.

Barry tried his luck from 25-yards on four, but his weak shot was comfortably gathered by Kiely.

Kishishev should have broken the deadlock two minutes later as Jensen found him in acres of space just inside the Villa box, but the Charlton man dragged a low shot wide.

Angel headed high and wide from Barry's left-wing cross on 13. Barry was much closer a minute later, but saw his left-foot drive just clear the bar. McCann then dragged a shot wide.

Angel and Allback combined well on 24, but the latter was unable to get any strength in his close-range shot. Bartlett got plenty of power in his effort moments later, but hit the underside of the bar and the ball bounced away to safety.

Kishishev sent a looping shot into the side-netting on 26 after an up and under caught Alpay napping at the back.

The Turk more than made amends on 37 as he hammered home a close-range volley to open the scoring from Lee Hendrie's left-wing corner.

Jensen curled a 25-yard free-kick wide on 40. Whittingham then saw a left-foot drive deflected behind by Young.

Angel almost doubled Villa's lead on the stroke of half-time, but was narrowly wide with a spectacular overhead kick.

Allback should have made it 2-0 on 52 as he raced onto Barry's through-ball. He was denied by Kiely and Whittingham fired wide from the follow-up.

Samuel grabbed his first Villa goal three minutes later with a strike to remember as he cut in from the left and unleashed a right-foot drive into the far corner.

Hendrie curled a left-foot effort wide on 58 after cutting in from the right with an impressive piece of skill. Moments later Fortune played the ball over his own bar as he struggled to clear a Whittingham cross.

Sorensen kept the scoreline at 2-0 with a spectacular save to keep compatriot Jensen's header out on 62.

Angel was denied by Kiely at the near-post two minutes later, before Alpay headed wide from a de la Cruz centre. Fortune had the ball in Villa's net on 67, but his effort was disallowed a referee Foy spotted a foul in the Villa box.

Jensen then blazed over from close-range. Whittingham's low shot was blocked by Kiely on 74 after McCann's surging run had left the Charlton defence for dead.

Charlton penalty appeals were ignored on 76 as Delaney appeared to have felled Bartlett in the box. Delaney then foiled Parker with a superb sliding tackle.

Lisbie reduced the arrears on 86, nodding home from close-range after a mix-up between Alpay and Sorensen.
