Fan Blog: Jonathan Fear - Benteke can be Villa legend
24th Jul 2013
It's never dull being a Villa fan is it? Six players...bish bash bosh...new contracts all over the place and positivity rises with the claret and blue faithful.
Then the grey cloud appeared!
The biggest disappointment of the summer? Well, for me it was Cheryl Cole once again so rudely rejecting my advances. But for the rest of the fanbase, the transfer request by Christian Benteke rocked the faithful.
I don't think it came as a massive surprise. But it hurt, nonetheless.
Most fans said the same thing, along the lines of 'just one more season, do the same again, have a storming World Cup and then if the top four come knocking, we won't resent a move'.
But the fact it came after just one season was the big issue.
Incredibly, though, the storm has already passed!
Now this WAS unexpected. It had looked like the player had set his mind on a move and that bridges had been burnt. However, for whatever reason, everything changed.
The speed of the U-turn and the signing of a new contract was just fantastic and put smiles on the faces of the fans.
Some supporters may still hold a grudge initially but hey, a few winning goals and that will be put to one side and forgotten.
I personally think he could become a great. He reminds me of a young Didier Drogba. The world is literally at his feet.
Some have said that he could be, like so many before in the Premier League, a one season wonder. With this lad, I just can't see it.
Some of his touches are just world-class and also, he isn't a one-trick pony. He has scored - as you will have noticed - from all angles and positions. That is the sign of a potentially awesome player. Defenders must hate playing against him.
Now, praise for the Villa hierarchy has been in short supply in the last few seasons. We've had a bumpy ride for sure.
But kudos HAS to go to the club for this new deal and the way it came about. The Board were very clear. They set a deadline. They set a price. They did not budge. They did not come out in the press exacerbating the situation. They just sat back and let it play out. They knew the good would win out. The 'winning' was either a bumper transfer fee to be re-invested in Paul Lambert's rebuilding job, or preferably, which has happened, the player staying and us getting his goals again next season.
They've done it before with Stewart Downing, Ashley Young, James Milner and Gareth Barry. All clubs must be able to see that.
Fans do like to moan, legitimately at times, but when it comes to transfers, it is clear our Board won't be bullied. I salute them for that.
Anyway, Ooooh Christian Bentekeeeeee! It's great that he's realised claret and blue is his colour. I now hope he sees out his career in B6 and becomes a legend.
If I was on Twitter and using a hashtag it would be #sweetdreamsaremadeofthese!
Oh - and on a personal note - I was delighted that Andreas Weimann signed an extended contract. I really do think this guy is the real deal. I love his positional play and his energy.
Another very exciting player to watch, long may he remain in claret and blue.
